The Loss of a Child Memorial

Designed by Pierre R. Tourney, AICA
Birmingham, Alabama

Susan Shirley wanted to incorporate some of her daughter Danielle’s favorite things on the memorial. As a young child, Danielle had been fascinated with butterflies, and in some way felt she was like a butterfly, changing from a child into a graceful adult. Though her life was short she brought the same beauty into the world that a butterfly does during its life span. Her memorial tribute was designed in circle to represent the never-ending cycle of her spirit that lives on in those who knew her. The statue of the girl represents Danielle and the butterflies are symbolic of her flight to life everlasting.
